Have you ever seen the movie, “Rise of the Guardians” (2012)? Well in that movie, there’s a concept that I fell in LOVE with….
The evil sandman had created black-sand horse spirits called, ‘Night-mares’. I love cheeky, play-on-words in art-I’ve loved that idea since and it shows up in my work from time to time….
I like to peruse FB Marketplace and Craigslist for funsies, and I came across a listing for a wooden carousel horse decoration from Pottery Barn...When I saw it-I immediately envisioned turning it into a nightmare of my own…
I knew the basics of what I wanted-and that I would paint it black, and use a lot of glitter for a dreamy effect. (And I just love glitter in general.) I originally fought between a black/blue color scheme, or a black/purple scheme, and after putting it to vote on my Facebook page-Purple was the winner.
I honestly, just added stuff as I went along. The end of her tail had broken off prior to my purchase of the horse, so I made a new, custom piece from polymer clay, and attached it, sanded it down, etc…(My favorite is the tiny pearl details on the bottom of her hooves!) After weeks of adding and drying and adding layers of acrylic paint, glitter, mod podge, spray foam, detail pieces and along with some blood, sweat and tears-We have this unique, otherworldly ‘Night-Mare’. I am very pleased with the outcome.
This was a blast to create and play with, but a pain to execute. I’ll never get the glitter out of my house-but you won’t have to worry about it in yours! (No promises) Isn’t she dreamy?
